Becoming a Christian

Holy Baptism

Baptism is the first step in the Christian’s journey of faith. Holy Baptism is the way a new Christian is made and is a sign to us of God’s grace in our lives. We love God because he loves us first. When we are baptised (or christened) we are initiated into fullness of life in Christ, our sins are washed away, and we are made one with him through the Holy Spirit.

Children and infants are baptised at our main Sunday Mass. No person is too old to be baptised and confirmed. Adults also may be baptised at any point, normally in conjunction with being confirmed and with appropriate preparation.

We offer baptism to those who desire it. If you or your child would like to be baptised please be in touch.

At Confirmation the gifts of the Spirit are given to us by God and are stirred up by the laying on of hands by a bishop. Confirmation candidates, after some preparation, publicly profess their faith, and are fully initiated as members of the Church. In the Diocese of London this is generally the point at which people are permitted to receive Holy Communion.

Whatever stage of the Christian journey you are on, St Mary’s welcomes all who come to faith and seek God’s love and action in their lives. We encourage you to be in touch if you are interested in any way about Baptism or Confirmation.

May God pour upon you the riches of his grace,
that within the company of Christ’s pilgrim people,
you may come to the inheritance of the saints in glory.
